Where many other floor coverings such as carpet, lino, and ceramic tiles will wane in and out of fashion, timber floors have a timeless classic character. Timber flooring has always been popular and will always compliment other shifts in taste and style of furnishings.

I am frequently asked to provide an opinion to customers as to whether they should use a gloss or satin finish when the floor sanding their timber floors. There are some circumstances which make one finish more appropriate over another, however often the choice comes down to nothing more than personal choice.

This week it was reinforced to me the importance of deck maintenance after we applied to top up deck coats to houses at Hawthorne and Morningside. In Southeast Queensland, we live in a very harsh environment. On sunny days decks can get very hot, this combined with rain degrades the finish on timber decks. Pool Decks and particularly decks without a roof need regular re-coating. Not all finishes are created equal, some will last longer than others, but all will require re-coating at various intervals. However, in today’s busy life, decks are more often than not, lacking in maintenance. The deck finish is left to degrade to the point where only re-sanding and finishing will restore the appearance of the deck. This is a considerably more expensive process than simply applying a topcoat, to an existing deck finish.
