We recently completed a comprehensive restoration project for a residence in Lytton, Brisbane, focusing on creating a seamless aesthetic for a home with a complex flooring history. This project involved the sanding, staining, and polishing of 135m² of dark wood flooring after existing floor coverings were removed to reveal the natural wood beneath.

The Starting Point: A Multi-Generational Challenge
Unlike a brand-new installation, this project began with the removal of old floor coverings, which unveiled a mix of three generations of different timber species. This variety, combined with historic water staining that had deeply penetrated the wood, meant that sanding alone would not achieve a uniform look. To ensure the client was happy with the final tone, we applied multiple sample stains for approval before proceeding with the full application.
Technical Challenge: Achieving Uniformity and Durability
The primary hurdle was unifying the diverse timber species and masking the persistent water stains. We utilized Fiddes LightFast Water Stain in Medium Oak to provide a consistent, rich foundation across the different wood grains. For the final protective layer, we chose Urethane Coatings Monothane Satin. This high-performance coating was selected for its durability and its ability to provide a sophisticated, consistent sheen across the entire 135m² area. Minor imperfections and gaps were meticulously addressed using colour-matched timber filler to ensure a flawless surface.

- The Modern Kitchen & Pantry: The rich, dark tones provide a striking contrast against the clean white cabinetry and modern gold hardware. We ensured the transition into the pantry remained seamless, maintaining the same high-quality finish in these high-traffic utility zones.
- The Bedrooms & Private Quarters: From the elegant bay window room to the minimalist corner bedrooms, the new finish highlights the natural grain while providing a sense of luxury and continuity throughout the home’s private spaces.
- The Hallway: The long run of the hallway perfectly demonstrates the success of the staining process. Any inconsistencies in the mixed species would be most visible here, but the result is a beautifully reflective, uniform path that ties the home together.

By carefully selecting the Medium Oak stain and a durable satin finish, we turned a mismatched collection of old timber and stained boards into a consistent, elite-tier floor.
